Vitsa, village of Central Zagori

Labeled as traditional, with particular historical, architectural and ecological interest, is one of the most characteristic villages of Zagori, area unique in Greece and Europe for the history, culture and nature. It is located 37 km from the city of Ioannina, on the road of Central Zagori, at borders of the Vikos-Aoos National Park and at the beginning of the famous Vikos Gorge.

Built amphitheatrically at an area of incomparable natural beauty impresses and causes the unsuspecting visitor to walk around the streets of the village and listen to it’s secrets…

Vitsa is a highland village in the prefecture of Ioannina. Located in the northern part of the prefecture, in Central Zagori, at the entrance of the gorge of the canyon Vikos, on the southeastern slopes of the peak Stouros. 37 km. North-east of Ioannina. Belongs administratively in the residential complex of Zagoria.

It is a residential complex that stands for the unity of the stone houses, churches, streets and squares, which make it one of the most representative villages of Central Zagori. It consists of two spatial units (districts), Ano and Kato Vitsa . The main economic activities of the people revolve around farming and agritourism. Important prehistoric finds have been excavated in the northwestern part of the settlement.

Preservation of Cultural Heritage

Unique architectural interest are the churches of Agios Nikolaos, Assumption of Virgin Mary and Archangels, the Missios bridge over the river Voidomatis. The village has particularly intense activity events. Among the local authorities are distinguished:
• Cultural Association of Vitsa and
• Brotherhood of Vitsa

The wealth of local tradition is expressed through celebrations of the Assumption of Virgin Mary August 15, Carnival with known Jamal (fires) and also celebrations of the lifestyle of the inhabitants as producing tsipouro (local drink) in early November.
